Wild flowers and gardens in Aysen
High season in Patagonia starts when the long and hard winter slowly retreats step by step, day by day, allowing Spring to emerge and dance into summertime. There are only a few places in the world where you can so fully appreciate how nature transforms itself during these months and offers to us the spectacular and well marked changes from Winter to Spring.
During November we see the red flower of notro bush covering the roadsides and mountain meadows. The brilliant yellow of the calafate flower juxtaposed against the dynamic blues of Lake General Carrera , joined with the cardinal red of the notro, paints a landscape that is impossible not to appreciate and enjoy. At the end of November, the Lupine burst into blossom and the coast of Lake General Carrera becomes an enchanted natural garden. Blooming everywhere. Lupines, or chochos, as they are called in Patagonia, full of colors, give beauty to the roadways, mountains and gardens of Patagonia. December is the month when every flower shows its plenitude: peonies, tulips, chilcos and wild roses decorate the landscape while the sun warms us with its gift of summertime temperatures.
Day 1: Balmaceda – Lake General Carrera
After being welcomed at the Balmaceda airport, we will drive along the Carretera Austral to the South, through valleys, forests, and mountains before seeing the vistas of the enormous Lake General Carrera. It will be a scenic trip and we will stop many times along the road to observe the huge nalca leaves and the variety of flora along the road. We will arrive in the evening to check into your cabin and eat dinner in front of the fire at the Mallin Colorado Ecolodge.
Day 2: Mallin Colorado hike
After breakfast, we will hike to the Mallin Colorado Lagoon. Very close to the lodge, we will be crossing through the amazing native forests of coigues, lengas and ñirre with dappled sunlight penetrating the rich greens of the lush ferns and mosses. Slowly going up the hill, we will reach the high ridges with open views to the emerald waters of Lake General Carrera ringed by snow capped peaks rising more than 6,000’ above the shore. We will stop whenever you wish to enjoy the great variety of flowers, herbs, bushes and wild fruits that grow in the mountains. We will return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, we will drive South to see the Baker River and its confluence with the Nef River, making a short stop in the small village Puerto Bertrand on the shores of Lake Bertrand. We will stop along the banks of the Baker River to watch the rapids and to appreciate the color and the power of Chile’s largest river. We will then visit the majestic point called La Confluencia, where the Baker River meets the Nef River, where the translucent turquoise of the Baker is forever altered by the reds and browns of the Nef. We will then return to the lodge in the evening.
Day 3: Marble caves and Exploradores Glacier
After breakfast, we will drive one hour North to visit the famous rock formations, the Marble Caves on the coast of Lake General Carrera. We will take a boat to the marble peninsula, where you will have the opportunity to see the artistic formations of marble in the ceilings and walls of the caves as they are reflected in the clear Caribbean colored waters of the lake. After the visit to this unique place, we will continue on a new road to the west, towards the Northern Ice Fields. The landscape changes slowly with verdant vegetation in the foreground and glaciers in the background as we approach the Ice Fields. At the foot of the glacier we will walk through an interpretative trail among the lush green forest and climb a moraine to arrive to a high overlook. From there, we have an extraordinary view of a glacial moraine, the tongue of which descends through a wide valley, as it descends from San Valentin, the highest peak in Patagonia. We will have a picnic lunch and come back to the lodge in the evening.
Day 4: Free morning and Puerto Guadal village
In the morning we will have a free day in the lodge appreciating its variety of flowers in the gardens and meadows with amazing views. After lunch, we will visit the small village of Puerto Guadal, with incredible vistas of the Ice Fields, beautiful homes and wild gardens. At the end of the day, we will go to a local beach to appreciate the most wonderful sunset, if weather conditions permit.
Day 5: Transfer to Balmaceda
We start our drive back to the airport early. We will have box lunch on route and arrive at the airport in time for the flight.
